    Agreement renewed at SBE May 2016 meeting (first agreement signed in 2008)
    Purpose:
    The Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education (JPDE), the North Carolina State Board of Education (SBE), and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) agree to this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop collaborative programs in K-12 education. The MOU recognizes that:
    JPDE and SBE have built a successful relationship through mutual exchange and shared values, and that this MOU will renew the relationship established at the signing of their previous MOUs on May 1, 2008 and May 7, 2012.
    Both Jiangsu Province and North Carolina are committed to strengthening the global competence of their students;
    Educational collaboration and exchange are effective vehicles for fostering the development of global competence and mutual understanding;
    Partnerships have already been established between schools in Jiangsu Province and in North Carolina, and,
    Institutions of higher education in Jiangsu Province and North Carolina are already collaborating on a variety of projects.

    Objectives:
    Current Exchanges or Projects:To strengthen knowledge and understanding of each other's countries and cultures among K-12 educational leaders, educators and students,
    To facilitate the development of programs and activities which will foster mutual understanding , and
    To develop a framework for a sustainable relationship between JPDE, SBE, and NCDPI.
    Facilitate and support the elementary, middle and high school partnerships already established between schools and further agree to encourage the development of additional school partnerships.
    Collaborations will focus on the themes of: Confucius Classrooms construction; Math and scrunchie education; language education; Culture and arts education; Lesson planning and research; Business climate; Education as a tool for economic development
    To the degree possible, technology should be utilized to facilitate dialogue and collaborations.

    The U.S. Department of State sponsors multiple programs for educational, cultural, and professional exchanges across the world for teachers.
    These programs include:
    The Global Connections and Exchange (GCE) Program which supports collaboration and online linkages among students, educators, and community youth leaders from U.S. and overseas secondary schools and youth organizations. (Must be nominated or invited to apply)
    The Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (TGC) which provides a professional development opportunity for middle and high school teachers from the United States to participate in a program aimed at globalizing U.S. classrooms through an online professional development course, two Washington, D.C.-based symposiums and a two to three week international exchange.
    The Fulbright-Hays Program which awards grants to individual U.S. K-14 pre-teachers, teachers and administrators, pre-doctoral students and postdoctoral faculty, as well as to U.S. institutions and organizations. The Program supports research and training efforts overseas, which focus on non-Western foreign languages and area studies. The Fulbright-Hays Program is funded by a Congressional appropriation to the U.S. Department of Education.

    The U.S. Department of State's English Language Specialist Program which recruits U.S. academics and professionals in the fields of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Applied Linguistics, or related fields to conduct programs overseas ranging from two weeks to five months.
    The Fulbright Specialist Program which sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at academic institutions abroad for a period of 2 to 6 weeks. (Deadline is rolling throughout the year)
    The J. William Fulbright-Hillary Rodham Clinton (Fulbright-Clinton) Fellowship is a component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Fulbright-Clinton Fellows serve in professional placements as special assistants in foreign government ministries or institutions and gain hands-on public sector experience in participating foreign countries while simultaneously carrying out an academic research/study project.

    Fulbright Travel-Only Grants for international travel are available to Germany , Hungary and Italy to supplement other fellowships that do not include travel costs or to supplement a student's own funds for study/research.
    The International Education Administrators (IEA) seminars program which helps international education professionals and senior higher education officials from the United States create empowering connections with the societal, cultural and higher education systems of other countries.
    The Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship which was launched in 2013 as a new component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. It provides opportunities for U.S. citizens to participate in an academic year of overseas travel and digital storytelling in up to three countries on globally significant theme. This Fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society.

    The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program which provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to spend an academic year attending a German school while living with a host family. The program provides a network of support through reputable international exchange organizations, field staff, trained volunteers, and carefully screened host families to ensure the safety and success of the participant’s exchange experience.
    The Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Program which offers graduating high school seniors the opportunity to live with a German host family, participate in a training or school program, and gain experience working abroad through an internship with a German company.
    The Chris Stevens Youth Network which provides specialized trainings in digital dialogue and online media sharing, discussions on global issues, and community building to schools in the United States and Middle East and North Africa region. The program promotes peace and conflict resolution through a combination of a person-to-person group exchanges and a virtual exchange. (Not open to public applications. A group of candidates from the same schools, classes, or youth clubs/organizations will be invited or nominated to participate.)
    The National Security Language Intiative for Youth (NSL-IY) which provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent graduates to learn less commonly taught languages. Participants will spend a summer or academic year studying a language while immersed in the culture and day-to-day life of the host country. A network of support through experienced international exchange organizations, field staff, trained volunteers, and carefully selected host families helps ensure a successful exchange experience. (Applications accepted in the Fall of every year)
    The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange & Study (YES) Abroad program which provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to develop a perspective of a Muslim culture first-hand. Participants spend an academic year attending a high school while living with a host family in select countries with significant Muslim populations. A network of support through partner international exchange organizations, field staff, trained volunteers, and carefully selected host families helps ensure a successful exchange experience.
    The American Youth Leadership Program is a leadership training exchange program for U.S. high school students and adult mentors. Participants travel abroad to gain firsthand knowledge of foreign cultures and to examine globally significant issues, such as the environment and climate change, food security and nutrition, the role of the media, and science and technology. Programs involve homestays with local families, language lessons, leadership training, and community service opportunities. Participants implement a follow-on project in their communities once they return home.

    Global Oneness Project : The Global Oneness Project is an online multimedia platform with a collection of interdisciplinary stories in the form of short documentary films, photo essays, and articles that examine global themes with a humanistic lens. Also included on the site are lesson plans, which the project says are intended to facilitate critical thinking, reflective writing, and in-class activities.
    Global Schoolroom : A site by and for teachers. The goal is to enable educators who want to deeply engage in global issues with their students by pooling our resources of assignment ideas, project ideas, and other classroom materials. This site was created for sharing and collaboration.
    Heifer’s Global Education Lesson Plans give teachers the resources to educate their students about their international neighbors while inspiring them to help build a better world.
    iEARN : The International Education and Resource Network is an organization that provides classroom materials, technology, and networks to take existing curriculum to higher, global level.
    National Geographic : Has innumerable interactive maps, videos, and other materials on international geography and contemporary issues. State Geographic Alliances also provide professional development in your state.
    National Peace Corps Association: Provides lesson plans for teachers to connect their classroom to the global community.
    Peace Corps Coverdell WorldWise Schools
    The Coverdell WorldWise Schools program site, hosted by the Peace Corps, offers lesson plans to help teachers integrate international content into their classrooms. The site also helps teachers connect with past and present Peace Corps volunteers around the world willing to share their first hand experiences international experiences with students.
